SGV Championships Preview

Nearly 1400 athletes from forty-five schools will contest the 12th Annual San Gabriel Valley Championships this Saturday, April 22 at 10:00am on San Dimas High School’s fast Mondo surface.

This area championship meet matches up schools and athletes to compete against their neighbors, regardless of league assignment and CIF division. The SGV’s is one of six regional championship meets taking place in the Southern Section this weekend, including the South Bay Championships, the Inland Empire Championships (San Bernardino & Riverside Counties) and the Championship meets for Orange, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties.

The Arcadia girls and California boys are looking to defend their team titles. The Apaches will be challenged by Walnut, Glendora and St. Lucy’s, while the Condors will try to hold back Damien, and Arcadia.

On the girls side, the top talent is in the field events with California Top 10 ranked Micah Fulton (Muir) leading the long jump and triple jump and Chino’s Taylor Crockem leading the shot and discus.

The top race will probably be the GV 3200 with Chloe Arriaga (Walnut) Trinity Ruelas (Bishop Amat) and Mikaela Ramirez (Ayala) facing off. The same three will meet earlier in the 1600.

Glendora’s Reynolds Twins, Shalee and Shyann, who have each gone 56.xx in the 400, will be in that race, where they’ll face Samantha Crosmer (St. Lucy’s) and Lauren Buehner (Arcadia). They will also run the 100 hurdles, where they hope to catch up with SGV leaders Malia Avila (Walnut) and Citalli Anguiano (La Mirada)

Among the boys, the top race will probably be 1600, where Mt. SAC 800 Champ Jake Lamb (Glendora) will step up to challenge Ayala’s two sub-4:20 men, Stephen Khan and Zach Arias.

SGV T&F Week 8: Shyann & Ryan are Athletes of the Week

The Mt.SAC Relays and dual meets provided most of the SGV track and field action last week. There were 18 improvements or additions to the Boys All-San Gabriel Valley lists, and 21 to the Girls.

Week 8: All-SGV Boys

Week 8: All-SGV Girls

The top area girl was Glendora senior Shyann Reynolds, with five big performances. She took the GHS 400m record from her twin sister Shalee with a 56.62 to rank #26 All-Time SGV, ran 44.97 in the 300m Hurdles to move #33 AT, PR’d in 100m Hurdles, and contributed to a GHS record in the 4x100m relay and a #40 AT 4x400m Relay. Whew!!!

On the boys side Ryan Renken (Sr, Claremont) ran the #9 SGV All-Time best in the mile at MtSAC. He was third in the screaming fast race, edging out and taking the school record from teammate Owen Bishop, running 4:11.02!

All-SGV Week 7: Claremont’s Annie & Owen Are the AoW

The big Track & Field action on week seven was at the massive Arcadia Invitational. Two Claremont athletes turned in strong efforts in the 3200 to be our Athletes of the Week.

Senior Owen Bishop  ran in what was probably the strongest boys 3200m race ever, with nine athletes under 8:50 and twenty-five under 9:00. Owen was just (!) 23rd in the race, but his time of 8:57.44 – a fifteen second PR, moves him to ninth on the All-Time San Gabriel Valley Performers list.

Annie Boos

His senior teammate Annie Boos was 11th in the Girls Invitational 3200m and her time of 10:26.15 moves her to #6 All-Time SGV.

Annie just edged out Walnut soph Chloe Arriaga and Amari Prude (Bonita-11) for the week’s top honors.

These two were one of 11 boys and 32 girls marks that either exceded or improved on a pervious mark that met the All-SGV standards.

This was a strong week for All-Time SGV performances, with eight more making the list or improving their position:

  • G200m/24.89 - Amari Prude (Bonita-11) – #37
  • G400m/56.15 - Amari Prude (Bonita-11) – #18
  • G3200m/10:34.20 - Chloe Arriaga (Walnut-10) – #8

All-SGV – Wk 6: Micah Jumps into the Top 10

After Week Six of San Gabriel Valley Track & Field, there were 16 additions or improvements on the Boys All-SGV lists, and 23 on the girls.

Micah Fulton, a junior at Muir, had the top performance of the past week. Her 19-02.50 long jump at Trabuco Hills moved her to #10 All-Time SGV. She also jumped 39-05 in the triple jump, just ahead of Charter Oak junior Sela Pastrana at 39-03.75. Both TJ marks would make the SGV All-Time Top 10, but without a wind reading they have to be considered wind aided.

The SGV’s other All-Time marks came from the Reynolds twins from Glendora. Shalee ran 56.77 in the 400m at Trabuco, followed by Shyann at 57.13. They now rank 25th and 36th All-Time SGV.

Here are the Updated All-SGV Lists for 2017:

First All-SGV Lists of the Year

It’s difficult to reward excellence in California track & field. We are the biggest state but one of only a hand full that have only one division for the championship. The CIF Southern Section is bigger than all but three states, and just the San Gabriel Valley is bigger than fifteen states.

That means that otherwise excellent performances can get lost in our massive state and in the CIF-SS. That’s why we created the All-SGV Standards for each event in track & field. The standards are 98% of the 100th best mark achieved in California in the previous year.

The result is a list of very strong marks, with an average of 8 SGV athletes meeting the standard in each event each year.

Here are pdf’s with the athletes that have already met the standard for the 2017 season.

The strongest event in the SGV so far is the 3200m, where a whopping 11 boys and 10 girls have already met the standard.

All-Time SGV Lists – Updated for 2017

For the past several years, we’ve been scouring the internet and haranguing coaches for information to create All-Time Top 50 Performers Lists for San Gabriel Valley Track and Field.

You can view the lists here:

These lists are still rough drafts. We’re pretty confident that we’ve found everything that’s available on the internet, and many coaches have helped with their school records and All-Time lists, but we know that there are many marks that have been lost over time. Please contact us in the comments if you have info on marks that would make the list.

But this is what we have. There are six boys with ten All-Time marks that are currently competing, and twenty-six girls with thirty-nine marks taking part in the 2017 season. With more to come!

A few notes on the list: in events where wind readings were recorded, we’ve only used wind legal marks. We’ve also used the current year’s California Top 100 marks as a standard for inclusion on the list – so there are several girls events where the All-Time list does not reach to 50. We have also tried to include every SGV team’s school records on the list, but this part is admittedly spotty.

After the jump is the SGV Top Ten performers for Saturday.  Div. II is still to come but the heat will probably prevent anyone from running their way onto the list.  We’ll update if they do.
