Montview #1: BP Doubles Down

Here’s meet coverage from Baldwin Park Coach Cobe Guzman.

The Baldwin Park boys and girls ran well, and came through with good team racing. The boys coming off the great Woodbridge meet showed no hangover and performed well. Running without 4 key varsity runners, including Salvador Capetillo returning from a recruting trip from Colorado. The young harriers and few seniors stepped up and held form, easily handling the first of 3 cluster meets. Baldwin Park was led by an improving Adolfo Velazquez, who is making a return to elite form after an injury riddled junior year. The winner of the meet was senior Cesar Bermudez from Sierra Vista HS, who is focused on a long post-season. Overall the boys ran well and handled the hilly Schabarum Park course.
On the ladies front, the Baldwin Park girls are continuing there rise and seek to perform better than last years group. Still a young team, they were led by sophomore Dyanne Contreras. They look forward to racing better and better week to week and make another run at a team title. The girls league meet winner was senior Maria Hernandez from Sierra Vista HS, who is eager to continue being the top girl in the Montview League.

Wednesday – September 23

  • Valle Vista #1 – 3 miles, rolling at Bonelli Park in San Dimas.  Covina are the defending champs on both sides, and they look likely to continue their streak.

  • Baseline #1 3 miles, hilly with slow footing at Red Hill Park in Rancho Cucamonga.  Damien and St. Lucy’s are exiled to this IE league.  The Regents can challenge for the league lead, while the Spartans will be looking for a top 3 finish. Update: This meet has been moved to Wednesday, 9/30

  • Montview #1 – 3 miles, very hilly at Schabarum Park in Rowland Heights.  Baldwin Park are the clear favorites, but Sierra Vista can challenge on the girls side.
  • Camino Del Rey Assoc #1 – 3 miles at La Mirada Regional Park.  This race combines two associated leagues.  Defending CIF Champs Bishop Amat are the class of the Del Rey League, while  the St. Paul Girls should boss the Camino Real. Live Results here (Update – Sorry, it turns out this meet was on Wednesday – BR)
  • Rio Hondo #1 – 3 miles, slow & twisting at Lacy Park in San Marino.  South Pasadena Boys made a strong debut at Woodbridge, while CIF ranked La Cañada are the clear girls favorites. (Update – It turns out that this meet was also on Wednesday)

  • Pacific #1  3 miles, hilly at Crescenta Valley Park 3 miles flat at Arcadia Park. Arcadia has been the traditional power here, and the girls are clear favorites.  SGV #1 Phillip Rocha is scheduled to make his seasonal debut here, but even with him, the Apaches will have a hard time reaching Burroughs (Burbank)
  • Prep #1 - 3 miles, hilly at Crescenta Valley Park. The Girls race will match up CIF #1’s Flintridge Prep and Mayfield on this course that runs similar to Mt.SAC.  FP is the clear favorite among the boys.

Check back in the evenings for results – we’ll post them as soon as we get them.

9/21 Rankings: We’re Up to Twenty!

CIFSS-Logo-for-Website-Home-News2-e1441143644533In his commentary on the latest CIF Southern Section Division Rankings, Rich Gonzalez remarked that there were “minimal changes” this week, with only five new teams entering the rankings.  But from our regional perspective - this was big news: three of those five are from the SGV, so we now have 20 ranked teams!

The Baldwin Park Boys went from off the radar to #4 in Div. III on the strength of a great performance, from 1-7, at Woodbridge.  On the girls side, Bonita is now #6 in Div. III off of solid runs at Woodbridge and their League Meet.  La Cañada is the final addition, entering the Div IV list at #6.

And updating from last week, our first in-season SGV rankings will appear next week, after the 4th week of the season.  The plan is to do SGV rankings again after Mt.SAC, and then again after CIF Finals.

Claremont Shows the PNW What’s What

Cross Country teams will often travel, for competition and for experience.  Claremont flew to Washington state to part in the Fort Steilacoom Invitational at a beautiful park in Lakewood, WA.

That's not a puddle...

That’s not a puddle…

The Wolfpack competed in the top Gold division, limited to teams that project to finish in the top ten of their state competitions, and CHS certainly confirmed that they belonged.

The Meet Winners!

The Meet Winners!

The Claremont girls thumped a strong PNW field with just 25 points and a team time of 96:79 on a rolling 5000 meter course, defeating the second placed team by nearly five minutes.  Junior Annie Boos led a 3-4-5-6-7 finish at 18:58.40 with junior Jax Heckers closing out the scoring at 19:16.30.

The boys faced an even stiffer challenge, but answered well to finish narrowly second to nationally ranked Tahoma HS 48-68.  Junior Ryan Renken led Claremont with a 5th/15:52.70 finish.

Woodbridge Saturday: Big Night for California & Arcadia

California High - Boys Rated Winners & the SGV's Best at Woodbridge

California High – Boys Rated Winners & the SGV’s Best at Woodbridge

The California Boys and Arcadia Girls took a huge step up in class at the national Woodbridge Cross County Classic at the Great Park in Irvine.  The course was a bit slower than previous years (and about equal to Rosemead), but the SGV performances were strong.

The Cal boys were the SGV’s top performers, winners of the Rated Race, finishing sixth overall.  The Condors put their top three in the first fifteen of the race - Cisco Cuellar – 8th/15:02.3, Julian Romero – 12th/15:12.1, & Angel Aguirre – 14th/15:14.

The SGV’s top individuals, running in the Sweeps race, also led their teams to excellent finishes.  Jack Van Scoter (Sr, Flintridge Prep) was SGV #1 in 14:38.9 while finishing 6th – his team was 10th.  Just behind was Salvador Capetillo (Sr, Baldwin Park) – 8th/14:39.8, running alone.  But earlier, his BP teammates had dominated the Boys Blue Division race without him.  Bishop Amat’s Robbie Santoyo (Sr) ran 14:52.9 for 19th and his team was 9th in the Sweeps.

The Arcadia Girls, featuring four juniors and three sophs ran a strong 88:11.9 to finish fourth in the Sweeps race.  Soph Holly Lung led her team with an outstanding 9th place, 16:58.8 finish, tops in the SGV The Apaches were nearly four minutes better than our next best team, and took six of the SGV’s top 14 spots in the meet.

La Cañada soph Katie Scoville was the SGV’s second best, 17:18.7 for 19th in the Sweeps race, while Walnut frosh Chloe Arriaga announced herself with massive 17:22.1 win the divisional Varsity race

Woodbridge Friday: Young South Pas & St. Lucy’s are Best

InvitationalLogo2Seniors Tim Corvese (Damien) and Emily Ye (South Pasadena) were the SGV’s top performers at the Friday portion of the 2015 Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, while two young teams led the SGV.  Woodbridge is run on a particularly fast and flat 3 mile course and this year attracted over 300 schools.

Corvese had an especially strong night, winning his heat. His time of 15:09.3, a nearly 40 second improvement from 2014, was the second fastest among all competitors on the night.  Ye made an even bigger jump to lead all SGV Girls, dropping over two minutes from her previous best with 18:32.6, and ranked 25th overall. South Pasadena junior Kieran Press-Reynolds was 22nd overall 15:38.2.

The South Pasadena boys team, making their debut here, were the top SGV team at 81:08.6, just edging out Damien’s 81:15.7. The teams ranked 11th & 12th overall, respectively, but more importantly 3rd & 4th among CIF Div. III schools.  And all of the Tigers scorers were underclassmen, so they can expect to develop a lot this season.

St. Lucy’s with an even younger team, were the top SGV Girls team at 98:19.0. The Regents, 19th overall, were led by soph Sabrina Lucio, 19:17.2/5th SGV, and their next five were three sophs and two frosh, so this once prominent program looks like they are on their way back.

Update: With the benefit of a merge of all divisions, South Pasadena turns out to be the top girls team on the night, edging out St. Lucy’s by 20 seconds.

Woodbridge Preview

Thirty-Two SGV schools will contest the huge (yoooge?) Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, Friday and Sunday at the Great Park in Irvine.  Nearly 300 schools, with 28 from out of state, are scheduled to run this super-fast 3 mile event that is contested mostly under the lights.

Ut_HKthATH4eww8X4xMDoxOjA4MTsiGNThe San Gabriel Valley will be strongly represented in Saturday night’s big Sweepstakes and Rated Races. Ten of the Top 12 in the Boys SGV Preseason Rankings will be competing, and eleven of the Girls Preseason Top 12.  Arroyo, Los Altos and Mayfield are idle this weekend, while La Salle is traveling to the Mt. Carmel Invitational, run on the national Footlocker Meet course in San Diego.

Update: We made a mistake.  Claremont’s varsity teams will not be at Woodbridge, but will compete instead at the Ft. Steilacoom Invitational in Lakewood, WA

We will need to wait one more week to see our top returning athletes. Phillip Rocha (Sr, Arcadia) - 14:32 at Mt.SAC last year, 5th AT SGV - and Ally Palomino (Jr, Bishop Amat), the SGV record holder at Mt.SAC at 17:13, will both make their 2015 debuts at next weekend’s Stanford Invitational.

Most of the SGV Schools will compete tonight, with the larger schools going tomorrow.  Of our ranked teams only the Claremont, Baldwin Park, and El Rancho Boys will run in the divisional races, as will Bonita among the Girls.

Five of our Boys Teams will compete in the big Sweepstakes Race Saturday night, and two in the Rated Race. Six Girls Teams are in the Sweeps, and one in the Rated.

If on form, both Arcadia and Claremont boys and girls should be among the leaders.  Here are all of the SGV entries in the Big Races

Boys Sweepstakes (9:54pm) – Arcadia, Ayala, Bishop Amat, Covina & Flintridge Prep.  Also entered as individuals are Salvador Capetillo (Sr, Baldwin Park) and Donald Brown (Jr, El Rancho).  Dillon Beckum (Jr, Bonita) is handling a minor injury and may sit out.

Girls Sweepstakes (9:34pm) – Arcadia, Ayala, Bishop Amat, Claremont, Flintridge Prep, and La Cañada.

Boys Rated (9:14pm) – Bonita & California

Girls Rated (8:54pm) – Whittier

Hacienda #1: West Covina Surprises, Walnut Confirms

The Los Altos boys and Walnut girls looked to be the favorites going into the first Hacienda League Cluster meet, run on a rolling 3 mile course at Bonelli Park.  But that’s why we run the races…

The Walnut Girls at Mt.SAC earlier this month.

The Walnut Girls at Mt.SAC earlier this month.

With a strong display of pack running, West Covina beat out Los Altos for the top spot, 35-41.  The Conqs Adam Preston (16:19) and Danny Venegas (16:53) were up front as expected, going 1-3, along with 3rd placed Walnut‘s Osamah Hassan, 2nd in 16:35 and Julian Serrano, 4th 16:58.

But you gotta be able to count to five in XC, and WestCo brought the next five across the line with just an eight second gap! Kenny Peterson, 5th/17:01 led the Bulldogs, and Oscar Chavez, 9th/17:09, closed the door.

On the girls side, Walnut’s  Arriaga sisters dominated as expected, with Chole 1st/18:26 and Emma 2nd/19:04.  The first non-family member was teammate Karina Galvan at 20:35 for third.  Los Altos also put three in the top ten, led by Wednesday Osuna 4th/20:41, but WHS closed it out with just 25 points to LAHS 58 for the win.  Chino was third, led by Sierra Santoyo 4th/20:45.

Mission Valley #1 – Arroyo = 2 x 17

Arroyo ran very well at last Saturday’s Rosemead Invitational, and continued that good form with two dominating wins in the first Mission Valley League cluster meet.  The meet was held at Bonelli Park on a somewhat hilly 3 mile course.

The boys scored just 17 points on a 1-2-3-5-6-7-8 finish!  The were led by seniors Jesse Ramirez and Kurt Hake who were 1-2, both in 16:08 after missing their chance to run on Saturday due to a power failure canceling the senior races. Rosemead senior Jesse Gonzalez broke up the Knights with a 4th place, 16:37 result.  Erick Espitia (Jr, South El Monte) and Jayson Espinosa (So, Gabrielino) rounded out the Top 10 at 9th/16:53 and 10th/17:00, respectively.  Gabrielino were solidly second in the team race, with Rosemead edging out South El Monte for third.

The Arroyo girls also turned in the same 1-2-3-5-6 scoring sequence, with only one senior in their seven! Junior Raylene Martinez was the winner in 19:59.  Rosemead frosh Jessica Perez spoiled an Arroyo sweep with a 4th/20:24 finish and led her team to a solid second place finish.  South El Monte were easily third, led by junior Hannah Morales 7th/20:45.
