By Bob Ramsey, on April 17th, 2015  Jorge Zapien from the Interview linked in the article Jorge Zapien was on a tear last year until a late season injury.  But Friday at the Arcadia Invitational , the California senior made up for lost time with 15-03 jump in the pole vault – and a legit effort at 16-00!  He now ranks #15 All-Time San Gabriel Valley and is our Athlete of the Week on the strength of that effort and this great interview linked here.
Jorge was one of five athletes with All-Time performances at Arcadia.  Arcadia junior Phillip Rocha returned from injury to run a great 8:59.42 3200m and is now #12.  Thaddeus Smith (Damien, Sr) moved up to #31= with a 10.71 100m.
Diamond Ranch junior Daniel Stokes stormed into the Top 50 with a 21.69 200m, a .42 PR that ranks him #45 A-T, while Gary Hawkins (Gabrielino, Sr) is now among the best with 14.41 #44 All-Time effort in the 110m Hurdles.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 14th, 2015 Arcadia, Ayala & Walnut remain solidly atop this week’s SGV Girls Team Rankings. Â The biggest mover was California, led by soph Lauren Anderson‘s 120-09 school record in the discus in the La Serna Dual Meet
 Sydney Mosley anchoring the relay at Arcadia At the massive national Arcadia Invitational, Monrovia senior Sydney Mosley led the SGV performers with her 13.85/3rd in the 100m hurdles. Â She is now ranked 4th All-Time among San Gabriel Valley athletes, and this was one of eight All-Time SGV performances at this big, big, meet.
The South Pasadena Tiger Invitational serves as a companion meet for Arcadia.  Fourteen SGV teams took part, and both local wins came from the hosts.  Junior Alexis Mora and senior Rowan Leddy took 300m Hurdles (46.68) and Pole Vault (10-00), respectively.
Following the growing trend of distance only “track meets” seven partial SGV “teams” made the trip to the Irvine Distance Carnival.   California senior Stephanie Cortez set a school record with a 5:08.49/2nd finish in the 1600.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 14th, 2015 Damien, the defending cup holders of  SGV Championships continue to lead this year’s team rankings, which measure team depth as well as quality.
The top three of Damien, Covina and Walnut are unchanged from last week, but the point totals are dropping as more performances are added to seasonal records.
All three teams featured prominently last weekend at the national Arcadia Invitational.  Senior Thaddeus Smith (Damien) was the top local performer with his 10.71/21.55 double in the sprints.
 Gary Hawkins The big change this week was Gabrielino, moving up eight spots to rank 11th.  They had a number of strong performances at their dual meet and on the weekend, especially Gary Hawkins’ 14.41 school record in the Highs at Arcadia.  However, much of their jump came from inputting all of their dual meet performances into the database this week. La Serna entered the rankings at 14th, also on the strength of dual meet performances.
On Friday night, fourteen local teams competed alongside a national field at the South Pasadena Tiger Invitational.  There were wins from three SGV athletes: 1:58.02 800m by Tim Corvese (Damien, Jr), 9:35.02 3200m by Donald Brown (El Rancho, So) and 6-02 high jump by Gavin Hong (Gabrielino, Sr).
Seven partial SGV teams made the trip to Orange County for the Irvine Distance Carnival – where California senior Samuel Bautista doubled back from Arcadia to finish second overall, 4:23.36 in the 1600m.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 10th, 2015  Eleven SGV athletes and seven relays have been accepted into the elite, evening portion of the 2015 Arcadia Invitational.
In last year’s meet, South Pasadena’s Claire Kieffer-Wright (now at Univ. of Michigan) finished second and equaled her SGV record with 6-00Â jump. Â Sydney Mosley (Monrovia) was fourth in the Invite 100 hurdles, and she is back in that race Saturday night.

“Most of the valley athletes competing are in the distance events. Walnut senior Millen Trujillo is in the invitational mile, Arcadia junior Phillip Rocha in the 3,200-meter invitational, Flintridge Prep junior Jack Van Scoter is in the seeded 3,200.
The Bishop Amat and Bonita boys and Amat girls are all in the distance medley relay.
Damien’s Thaddeus Smith is in the invitational 200 and seeded 100, and Zachary Shinnick is in the invitational 200 and 400. Bonita sophomore Dillon Beckum is in the invitational 800, Monrovia’s Sydney Mosley in the invitational 100 hurdles, teammate Micah Fulton in the triple jump and Arcadia’s girls in the invitational 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
Gabrielino’s Gary Hawkins is in the seeded 110 hurdles, Monrovia’s Baileigh Akins in the seeded 100 hurdles, St. Francis’ Ross Niederhaus in the seeded 400, Monrovia’s boys in the seeded 4×100 and 4×400 relays and the Wildcats’ girls in the 4×100 seeded relay.”

By Bob Ramsey, on April 7th, 2015  Caleb Having a Tougher Time of It in the Highs One of the joys of our sport is the sudden improvements the athletes can make.  At Saturday’s Covina Invitational, Bonita junior Caleb Stanton dropped an almost out-of-nowhere 38.13 to win the 300 Hurdles.  That mark gives him the lead in SGV, the meet record and the probable Bonita school record. It ranks him #43 All-Time among SGV Performers and makes him our Athlete of the Week.
Right behind Caleb, with 38.23, Leo Brown (Covina, Sr) also broke the meet record and now ranks #47 AT SGV.  Defending SGV Champ B.J. McLauren (Bonita, Jr) took over the SGV yearly lead with a big 46-00 PR in the Triple Jump.
There were two All-Time SGV performances at the UCLA Legends Invitational. Â Walnut senior Millen Trujillo was 9:13.10/2nd in the 3200, best in the SGV this year and #41 All-Time. Â Ross Niederhaus (St. Francis, Sr) improved to #31 AT SGV with a 48.31 400.
And in dual meet action Zach Shinnick (Damien, Soph) took over the SGV seasonal 200 lead with a wind legal 21.48, #31 AT SGV, to go along with his 47.91 #17 All-Time 400 from the previous week.
These athletes are among twenty-five individuals and relays that met the new All-San Gabriel Valley Standards this week.  These standards were created to award excellence in each event, measured against an objective standard.  The standard is 102% of the mark of the 100th best performer in California in 2014.
The strongest events for the SGV boys have been the 3200 and the 110 hurdles, each with eleven performers meeting the SGV Standard.  At the other end, none of our throwers have met the 56-06/151-09 standards… yet.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 7th, 2015 Bishop Amat junior Jessica Gallardo was the SGV’s top performer in Week 6, leading the way with her 800/1600 double at the big Trabuco Hills Invitational.
 Jessica competing last year for Walnut Jessica took the SGV seasonal lead with her 5:03.53/6th finish in the 1600 that ranks her 20th All-Time among SGV performers. In the 800, she was 2:15.96/3rd, and is now 23rd AT SGV and second best on the season behind Claremont soph Annie Boos. Â
In other SGV leading performances at Trabuco, Kayla Richardson (Walnut, Jr) improved to #20 AT SGV with her 56.53 win, and SGV Defending Champ Ally Palomino (Amat, Soph) moved to #25 with her 11:03.31/2nd.  California soph Lauren Anderson set a school record with her 119-04/6th placing in the discus.
Arcadia’s 47.68 4×100 relay win at the Spartan Relays improved their school record and took them to #20 AT SGV, while Kylie Eagon (Ayala, Sr) joined two others in the SGV high jump lead with 5-04 effort at the Covina Invite.
These athletes are among thirteen individuals and relays that met the new All-San Gabriel Valley Standards this week.  These standards were created to award excellence in each event, measured against an objective standard.  The standard is 102% of the mark of the 100th best performer in California in 2014.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 6th, 2015 Damien moves atop the SGV Boys Team rankings, but only just.  Covina put in a really strong performance at their eponymous Invite, while Bonita made their own big move.  And beginning this week, the rankings are extended to twenty deep.
 Daniel Salazar The Covina Invitational at Azusa Pacific was the main local action. Fifteen SGV schools took park, with the host Colts taking the team title over Bonita. Covina junior Daniel Salazar was awarded Athlete of the Meet on the strength of his 800 win and 3rd in the 1600 and a leg on the second place 4×400 team.
At the prestigious Trabuco Hills Invitational California senior Sam Bautista had the top local performance with at 4:24.74/4th in the Invite 1600, while Millen Trujillo (Walnut, Sr) was an excellent 9:13.10/2nd at the 1st UCLA Legends Invitational.

By Bob Ramsey, on April 6th, 2015  Arcadia Girls Relays! This week’s SGV Girls Team Rankings are unchanged at the top, but we’ve decided to extend them to twenty deep!
Leaders Arcadia competed in Oxnard’s Spartan Relays, winning all of the short relays, with their 4×100 breaking their school record & both of their 4×400 teams finishing under 4:00
Five SGV teams competed in the big Trabuco Hills Invitational, led by a great double from Walnut junior Kayla Richardson, first in the 400 and second in the 200 against a very strong field.
The local Covina Invitational always has strong local representation, with San Dimas finishing third in the team race.  San Dimas soph Trinity Ruelas was the top local with a strenuous and successful triple, with wins in the 1600 & 3200 and a second in the 800.

We’ve changed our method of ranking teams for 2015, giving more emphasis to overall depth and strength. Â (You can read about the details on the post for the girls rankings below).
 Walnut and Damien are strong and complete teams, with Championship level athletes in most events and the ability to score in every event in a dual meet, That strength is shown in the first team rankings where they are separated by just one point!
D3 power Covina is another all-around team that has jumped up to third, followed by distance-heavy SGV newcomers Ayala. Special honor to Claremont and Rowland who have made huge progress in the new season. And so here’s this years first list…

Last season’s rankings awarded a point for each athlete or relay ranked in the Top 10 in the San Gabriel Valley. Â Upon reflection, those rankings more or less paralleled championship meet rankings, and we already have a meet to figure that out.
This year’s rankings will use overall team quality and depth to determine likely dual meet strength.  And so, here they are…
Girls 2015 SGV Team Rankings
 Arcadia begins 2015 where they ended last year. As usual, they are a strong team, with the ability to score in every event, and are especially strong in the sprints this year. Â SGV newcomers Ayala are second, with special strength in the distances and field events.
Last year’s runner up Walnut, another well-balanced team, is off to a bit of a slow start with several top athletes yet to check in.  They are third, but the real noise so far have been Bonita and El Rancho, who have made big moves from last year’s rankings. So…
