Week 3 Roundup: Arcadia Again, La Cañada Makes Its Case

Sergio (L) & Ryan

Defending National Champions Arcadia won their second title in as many weeks, traveling to Idaho for the national Bob Firman Invite.  Led once more by strong efforts from their senior leaders Sergio Gonzalez (3rd/15:55) & Ryan Vargas (4th/15:56), the Apaches ran well and overcame the loss of two Varsity runners to illness on the tough 5000 meter course.  They defeated several teams ranked higher nationally, as well as SS rivals Rancho Cucamonga and Trabuco Hills.  Full results are here.  Dyestat Coverage is here.

Div. IV #1 Don Bosco made the trip to the Nike Pre-Nationals in Oregon, with senior J.J. Dominguez (46th/16:20) leading his sick and recovering teammates to a 20th place finish. (Full Results).  And on this weekend of travel, eight SGV schools traveled to the big Stanford Invitational, with Mayfield and Flintridge Sacred Heart going 2-3 in the Div. IV race.

Closer to home the La Cañada girls were first with a perfect 15, led by junior Sonja Cwik‘s 17:45 win, and the boys second in their division at the Griffith Park based Bell-Jeff Invite.  The ranked Glendora boys were first and the girls second at the small Wayne Wilson/Sunny Hills Invite.  The weekend’s top female performance came from Whittier Christian senior Kelli Hunt – her 17:20 for 3 miles broke the D3 Course record at the big Dana Hills Invitational in Orange County.

SGV Top Performers Week 3: Through 9/24/11

Please Note:  It is notoriously difficult to compare XC performances.  The athletes listed below ran different and possibly inaccurately measured distances, in different weather, over different running surfaces and terrain.  These rankings try to account for those differences by converting times to a norm of a flat, 3-mile course.  Your mileage may vary.

Conversion Factors

  • Bell-Jeff (no adjustment) – 2.9 miles, hilly
  • Bob Firman (-1:15) – 5000 meters, slow surfaces, 2 sharp hills.
  • Dana Hills: (+10 boys/+10 girls) – 3 miles, pavement and grass, slightly net downhill
  • Nike Pre-Nats (-1:15) – 5000 meters, slow surfaces
  • Stanford: (-32/40) – 5000 meters, slightly rolling, fast surfaces
  • Sunny Hills: (-15/-20) – 3 miles, somewhat hilly
