Dog Days & Pomona: Getting Caught Up

Lost in the massive shuffle of Mt.SAC were two recent meets, one just before and one on the same Saturday as the big meet.

Last Wednesday, the four schools of the Pomona Unified School District got together for the first Pride of Pomona XC race at Bonelli Park.  Junior Liz Reyes was a dominating winner, her 19:26 for 3 miles besting second placed teammate Lupe Mendez (20:38) by over a minute.  In the boys race Abraham Albaraca (Pomona) just edged our Mark Newport (Diamond Ranch) 16:09 to 16:10.

Three SGV teams, including the Div. III ranked La Cañada girls decided to bypass the big meet to run in the small (15 teams) second year Dog Days of Fall meet, run over a flat 3-mile course on the campus of hosts Cajon High School.  The Spartan girls (97:39) were edged out by Temecula Valley and were led by Sonja Cwik who was 2nd/18:40, with Anna Frederich 4th/19:07 and Meghan Fuelling 6th/19:10 in the top finishers.  The Northview girls, tops in the Valle Vista League, were 6th/102:47 in the same race, led by Elizabeth Esparza 17th/19:47.  On the boys side, Omar Farias (So) at 13th/16:38 was best for Garey while senior Brendan Greene 27th/17:02 was best for La Canada.
