ESGV Preview – Week 1

2010 Cross country makes it’s official start this Saturday, with local athletes traveling all over Southern California to open their seasons in Irwindale, Chino, Walnut, and Laguna Hills.

The meet with the biggest local participation and the only one in the area is the Bosco Tech Invitational at Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Irwindale.

Bassett, Bishop Amat, Covina, Gabrielino, La Puente, Los Altos, Nogales, Northview and Rowland are all scheduled to compete.  The first race is at 8:00am over a fast, flat, and mostly paved 3 mile course.

Top ten finishers from last year included Junior Race: Jonathan Flores-8th (South Hills), Vanessa Lopez-7th (Rowland) and Nicolette Garcia-9th (Los Altos); Soph Race: Joshua Sanchez-6th (Los Altos); and Frosh Race: Felipe Tapis-2nd and David Galvez-3rd from Rowland.

Defending meet champs Glendora lead the field at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Diamond Bar HS and Cal Poly Pomona at Prado Park in Chino.

This is a 5000 meter race on a somewhat flat but slow, grassy course, with the boys competing in Varsity, JV, and Frosh/Soph divisions and the girls in Varsity and JV.  Along with Glendora and the hosts, the ESGV will be represented by San Dimas and South Hills.

In last year’s race, the top local finisher was Glendora junior Lauren Justus with her 19:15 for second place. She was joined in the top 10 by St Lucy’s juniors Taylor Hebb (5th) and Marissa Horton (6th) and soph Kristy Hebb (8th).  The Tartan boys were led by Junior Anthony Castro (16:29) who was joined in the top 10 by teamates Kelly Hernandez-Jr-6th and Austin Mendoza-Soph-7th, and Diamond Bar’s Alexander Harvey in 9th.

Claremont with be the sole local school in the massive Laguna Hills Invitational, run over a somewhat hilly 3 mile course in and around the host school’s campus, while Arroyo will once again host the Fastback Shootout run over the 1.92 mile course at Mt.SAC.  We couldn’t confirm this year’s entries, but last year, the hosts and Azusa took part.

And we’re off…
