Shinnick (x2) Leads Strong SGV Showing at State Prelims

Damien Soph long sprinter Zachary Shinnick took another big step forward at last night’s California State Championship meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

Zachary Shinnick

Zachary Shinnick

Competing in the strongest HS meet in the country (the world?) Zach dropped a 47.34/21.28 400/200 double to advance to today’s final as the 4th seed in both events.  With those PR’s Shinnick is #14/200 & #13/400 All-Time SGV. He looked well within himself in both events, so today can be really exciting.

Zach was one of eight nine individuals and two relays who advanced, easily the strongest SGV showing in recent years.  And get used to it – five of the advancers were juniors and two were sophs.

2015 California State Track & Field Meet – Key Details

Junior short sprinter Kayla Richardson (Jr, Walnut) nearly matched Zach’s achievement while advancing in the 100 & 200.  She shook off a poor start in the 100 to run 11.74, just off her lifetime best, and then powered to a PR 23.85 in the 200.  She will be the fourth seed in both events in the Final, and her 200 time moves her to #7 All-Time SGV.

Rising short sprinter Daniel Stokes (Jr, Diamond Ranch) shook off a warning in the 100 to advance in both sprints with a 10.83/21.70, both times just off his best.

Monrovia senior Sydney Mosley achieved her goal of running her best at the end of the year with a smooth 13.86 to win her heat in the 100 Hurdles.

Matching Sydney on the boys side Jasher Foster (Jr, St. Francis) handled the step up in class with a PR 14.22 to advance 5th in the 110 Hurdles.  He is now #25= All-Time SGV.  Here’s an interview with him from DyeStatCal

Bonita soph Dillon Beckum had a busy four laps as he advanced in the 1600.  He lead through 800 and then moved around a lot the next to laps to finish 5th/4:14.47 in his heat and advance on time.  He is the only soph boy in the 1600 final.

In the Final event of the night Arcadia (Rebecca Troescher, Rachel Wiggins, Lauren Buehner, Sarah Troescher) advanced in the Girls 4×400 with a 3:48.84 effort that left room for improvement.  They’ll line up tonight seeded fifth.

In the field events, Esteban Suarez (Jr, South Pasadena) continued his late season ascent in the pole vault, advancing with a jump of 15-02, just off his 15-03 best from Masters.

Update: There was some confusion over the advancement procedure in the vertical jumps last night, but now that it’s cleared up, Barrett Weiss (Flintridge Prep) has advanced in the Pole Vault.  He jumped 14-08 and finished =10th on misses, but advances for having cleared the same height at the 9th place finisher.  So, we have two SGV athletes in the Pole Vault Final.

Additionally Thaddeus Smith (Sr, Damien) qualified in the 100, and led his team to a 41.73 qualifying effort in the 4×100.  However, Smith was DNS in the 200 and has scratched the 100 Final.  The Spartans have not scratched the relay, so we’ll have to see if they make it to the line tonight.

And after the jump, a live blog of the Prelims

2015 California State Track & Field Prelims – Live Blog

  • 10:25: There is a late report that Thaddeus Smith has been dropped from 100 final.  He was DNS in the 200, so he may be injured.  No word on what this does to Damien’s 4×100 team.
  • 10:15: The SGV, with 5% of the State’s population, earns 4.2% of the places in the Finals.  Not bad…
  • 10:03: As per usual, the Southern Section, with 22% of the guaranteed spots in the State Meet (6 of 27) earns 50% (156 of 309) spots in tomorrow’s Finals.
  • 9:30: Field events begin tomorrow at 4:30, track events at 6:00.
  • 9:28: Arcadia advances in the #7 spot.  And that’s a wrap for the SGV.
  • 9:20: Two of their legs didn’t look really sharp, but Arcadia is 3rd in H2 in 3:48.84, just off their best, and likely to advance.
  • 9:14: Correction, they are only advancing the top 9 plus ties in the pole vault, so Barrett Weiss did not advance.
  • 9:00: We only have the girls 4 x 400 left, with Arcadia in the second heat.  They are expected to advance.  So with that remaining, the SGV has advance in 1 of 2 relays, and 14 of 21 individuals have advanced.
  • 8:53: Hannah is out at 5-04.  Thirteen girls still in at 5:06.
  • 8:49: Hannah Nance is down to her last attempt at 5-04.
  • 8:47: Marks this year are a little off the torrid pace of previous years.  That means the At-Large standards go up, so more chances for SS athletes.
  • 8:45: Thaddeus Smith does not start the 200.  Shinnick and Stokes advance, Zach is now #14 All-Time SGV.
  • 8:41: Daniel Stokes is 3rd H2 in 21.70, just off his best. He’s third on time with one heat to go. Nance is now back in the HJ rotation at 5-04.  It will probably take one more bar to advance.
  • 8:36: Zach Shinnick 2nd H1 in PR 21.28 (+1.2) – another PR!
  • 8:34: Three SGV’s in the boys 200, all doubling back.
  • 8:27: Kayla Richardson is in the first of three 200 heats. She closes well to run 23.85 (+0.7), a life-time best that should  hold up.  She is now #7 All-Time SGV.
  • 8:20: Boys Pole Vault has been updated.  Esteban Suarez advances with a second attempt 15-02.  Barrett Weiss is in with second attempt 14-08.  Gareth Weiss is DNQ with 14-02
  • 8:05: Hannah Nance clears 5-02 on her second attempt. 21 over the opener, 10 on the first attempt, six on second, five on the third.
  • 7:59: The results in the boys pole vault are not being updated.  In the high jump, Nance will be joining the rotation shortly.  8 girls are over 5-02 on first attempt, 4 more on second, six athletes still on the opening height.
  • 7:36: At at little past the halfway point of the meet, 8 of 15 SGV athletes and relays have advanced.  One relay and eight athletes to go.
  • 7:34: Oops! A big miss in the boys highs.  Jasher Foster (St. Francis) advanced with 14.22 (+0.5), fifth seed and fifth best time.  That time moves him to #25= All-Time SGV.
  • 7:29: Smith caught rocking back in the blocks by the gun, finishes 3rd in 10.81.  Both Smith and Stokes advance. McLauren does not improve with third attempt, finishes 21st/DNQ.  12th was 45-04.
  • 7:26: Stokes flinched in the blocks, but the caution was charged to the field.  Was left in the blocks on the second start, but finished 3rd in 10.83.  On the bubble. Smith up now.
  • 7:20: State Leader T.J. Brock falls out of blocks in first heat, is only given a caution.
  • 7:17: Thaddeus Smith (Damien) & Daniel Stokes (Diamond Ranch) now up in the 100 – three heats.
  • 7:15: Shinnick advances with the second fastest time and fourth seed in the 400, Richardson advances as 5th seed with 4th best time in the 100.
  • 7:08: Richardson started poorly but concentrated well through the final 2/3’s of the race.  Ran 11.74 (0.9) for second, is likely to advance. McLauren only 43-04 on second attempt. 12th is 44-06 right now.
  • 7:05: Kayla Richardson (Walnut) in the second of four 100m heats.  She can advance if she runs well.
  • 7:01: Girls High Jump starting with Hannah Nance (San Dimas).  Opening is 5-02, she should advance with a good effort.  McLauren fouls first jump in TJ.
  • 6:50: Shinnick, with a big move from 180m, pushes national leader Michael Norman to the line.  Zach’s PR 47.34 moves him to #13 All-Time SGV and is almost certain to advance.
  • 6:47: Feng – NH in the pole vault.  16 over with 4 passing at the opening 11-02.
  • 6:45: Next up, Zachary Shinnick (Damien) in the 400.  He’s the sixth seed and in heat 1 of 3.  Winners plus the next six on time advance.
  • 6:40: Second flight of the boys Triple Jump getting underway with B.J. McLauren (Bonita).
  • 6:34: Feng is alive in the PV, and has missed her first attempt at 11-02.
  • 6:22: Last qualifier in hurdles is 14.44, Wassadakran DNQ.

  • 6:16: Alan Tantiwassadakran (Walnut) is 3rd in the first heat of the 110 Hurdles at 14.60.  Let’s see if it holds up.
  • 6:10: Sydney Mosley (Monrovia) advances, winning her heat in 13:86.  She will be the #3 seed in the Final.
  • 6:00: Beckum Leads through 800, runs 4:14.47/5th in his heat, advances on time.  Boys Pole Vault getting underway.  Opening height is 14-02.  Barrett & Gareth Weiss (Flintridge Prep) and Esteban Suarez (South Pasadena) are in this.
  • 5:53: Trujillo has a tough go of it – 4:21.53 for 12th and will not advance.  Porter has his third miss and will not advance.
  • 5:47: Boys 1600 up next.  Millen Trujillo (Walnut) in the first heat and Dillon Beckum (Bonita) in the second.  Beckum is likely to advance, Trujillo on the bubble. First four in each heat and the next four on time advance.  Porter with a second miss in the HJ.
  • 5:43: Porter is now back in the HJ rotation, and has missed his first jump at 6-08.  This is likely the bar that will advance to the Final.
  • 5:35: Five events in, the Southern Section has 32 of the 54 qualifying spots.
  • 5:32: Damien advances with 6th best time in 4×100.

  • 5:06 – Walnut is well off their best in the 4×100 with 48.12 – DNQ
