CIF Rankings – Week 8 – 10/22: We’re up to 25!

This was the second week of the CIF Southern Section Rankings expanding to 16, and the San Gabriel Valley increased its share in the rankings from 22 teams to 25.

This is a big achievement for our area. We make up just over 10% of the Southern Section’s population, yet we have nearly 16% of the ranking spots.

The SGV also has four boys teams and 5 girls teams ranked in the California State Top 10 last week, led by Claremont who rank at the top in both the boys and girls Div. 2.  The SGV has 5% of the state’s population, but our schools have earned 9% of the spots in the rankings.

Five schools moved into the rankings this week – Flintridge Sacred Heart (D4) & Vivian Webb (D5) on the girls side, and South Hills (D3), Pioneer (D4) and Maranatha (D5) on the boys. Falling from the rankings were the Covina girls (D4) and, surprisingly given their solid performance at Mt.SAC, Damien (D3).

Twenty of the teams were ranked for the second consecutive week in the expanded rankings, and so earned an at-large berth in CIF Prelims should they fail to advance from their leagues. Teams earn an at-large spot by ranking in the top 16 twice in the final four weeks – this was week two of the final four

Of those twenty, only the Bonita boys and girls are at all likely to need an at-large spot. Damien may need one as well, so they will be hurt by falling from the rankings. None of the newcomers to the rankings are likely to need an at-large spot, nor is Covina.

Four of the SGV Girls Top Ten were unranked: #5 Arcadia, #8 Glendora, #9 California & #10 La Serna. Only #6 Rowland and #9 Glendora are unranked among the boys, but except for Glendora, none of these are likely to need a ranking to advance.
