Woodbridge Friday Preview: South Hills and Covina Looking to Shine

The Puma Compound at WXC

The Woodbridge Invitational is huge, with over 100 teams coming from all over our state and several other states as well.  It’s become so big that the organizers have scheduled the meet over two days, with smaller Red and White divisions competing Friday night (under the lights!) at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa.  Covina and South Hills look to be the strongest SGV contenders on the first day, along with CIF ranked Flintridge Sacred Heart, which made a late decision to move out of the Sweepstakes and into the divisional races.

The meet website with full team list and schedules is here.

In the Red division, Covina and South Hills will be looking to confirm their excellent opening efforts.  The Colts boys saw strong performances from Kevin Mejia (Jr) and Paul Gonzalez (Sr), while Miles Sustayta (Sr) and Jason Diaz (Jr) had an even stronger opener for the Huskies.

On the girls side, South Hills’ Alex Borunda (Sr) and frosh Danielle Murrietta along with Covina senior Ashli Baddorf are the top SGV individuals.

Bassett, and Charter Oak are also scheduled to compete, along with the non-Varsity Damien athletes and La Serna minus Micahel Munoz, who will be running in Saturday’s Sweepstakes race.  The Spartan Varsity will be in Saturday’s rated race.

In the White division, assuming they run their full team, Flintridge Sacred Heart should contend for the girls title.  At full strength they’re led by seniors Stephanie Vargas and Paulina Antaplyan.  Colin Peterson (Sr) and Noah Brown of St. Francis should lead the Golden Knights to a high finish.  Bonita’s Dillon Nobbs, last year’s top frosh in the ESGV, should also find himself near the front.

Northview, Pioneer and San Dimas are scheduled to compete, along with the lower division teams of Damien, Don Bosco, South Pasadena and the Bonita girls.  The varsity squads from those four will compete in Saturday’s Sweepstakes (Bosco and Bonita) and Rated (Damien, South Pasadena) race.
