Week 2 Round Up: Arcadia Still There, Many Others Coming!

This past weekend saw reigning National and everything champs Arcadia boys defend their first title at the Woodbridge Invitational.  The Apaches had an amazing day, but California and Damien also staked their claim to future CIF and State meet spots.  Arcadia senior Ryan Vargas was again the top SGV athlete of the week, with his 14:27 effort leading six other SGV athletes (including five teammates) under 15:00!

On the girls side, Div. I ranked Arcadia was also the top local team, with their combined 89:20 leading the SGV by a large margin.  The Apaches’ Veronica Yamane and Alejandra Quintero, both at 17:17, shared top honors among the SGV, along with divisional race winners Marissa Scott (Jr, Bonita), 17:20 in the White division, and Bailee Henry (Jr, El Rancho) Blue division winner in 17:45.

In the SGV hosted Rosemead Invitational, locals Whittier and Mayfield took top honors on the boys and girls side.  The Cubs put five in the top fifteen to win the girls side easily and confirm their Div. IV ranking, while Whittier junior Marilu Pulido was the top local and 3rd overall in 17:59.  Her Cardinal teammates narrowly edged out State Div. III champs St. John Bosco to win the boys meet, and were led by senior Aaron Mora (14:40), 2nd overall and tops in the SGV.

La Salle junior Daniel De La Torre traveled alone to the big Mt. Carmel Invitational in San Diego and finished nearly alone, winning his heat and finishing 8th overall in 15:16 on a hilly 2.95 miles course.

SGV Top Performers Week 2: Through 9/17/11

Please Note:  It is notoriously difficult to compare XC performances.  The athletes list below ran different and possibly inaccurately measured distances, in different weather, over different running surfaces and terrain.  The list below tries to account for those differences by converting times to a norm of a flat, 3-mile course.  Your mileage may vary.

Conversion Factors

  • Mt. Carmel: (– 30 boys) – 2.95 miles, crowded, hilly
  • Rosemead: No Conversion – 3 miles, flat, good surfaces
  • Woodbridge: No Conversion – 3 miles, flat, good surfaces
